Dorm Decor: Floral Letter DIY

While looking on Pinterest a few days ago, I came across this adorable DIY project! I was just telling my roommate how we needed some flowers in our dorm room to make it more summery! This was the perfect solution. These letters are adorable and personalize a space to be your own. I think they’re great for a dorm room or bedroom, you could place the letter above your bed or on your bedroom door like I did.

Floral Letter

Step 1.

Collect all the supplies you’ll need. This includes:

  • a variety of faux flowers: I bought mine from Dollarama since they were the most budget friendly. However craft stores like Michaels also sell gorgeous faux flowers
  • cardboard: save money and get cardboard boxes for free from stores like the LCBO or a local grocery store. I got mine from No Frills
  • exacto knife: I used scissors but an exacto knife will be much easier to cut the letter out of the cardboard
  • pencil and eraser
  • glue gun: if you don’t have a glue gun you can use Scotch dots available at Dollarama instead (this is what I used but a glue gun is a much better idea)

Step 2.

On your piece of cardboard, use a pencil to draw out the letter you wish to create. It’s completely up to you how big or small you want to make the letter. Use your eraser if needed to make any necessary changes. You want to make sure the letter is wide enough to fit the flowers you will be gluing onto it.

Step 3.

Using your exacto knife or tip of your scissors, carefully cut out your cardboard letter. If you don’t have many flowers and there’s a chance you can’t cover the cardboard completely, I would suggest painting the cardboard at this step for a more appealing final product. If you have enough flowers, don’t worry about painting the letter.

Step 4.

Take the faux flowers and pop them off of the stems. This should be easy to do and you should be able to see where the flower and stem attach. Once you pop off all the flowers, snip the underside so they will lay flat on the cardboard. Make sure you don’t cut too close to the flower or else the whole flower will fall apart.

Step 5.

Plan out how you’re going to place your flowers so the colours are balanced and the cardboard is covered. After you plan it out, use your glue gun and place a dot of clue on the back of the flower before pressing it into the cardboard. Hold it there for a few seconds. If you don’t have a glue gun, peel off on of the Scotch Dots for each flower. If you have bigger flowers, they will likely require two dots. Glue down all the flowers and see it come together!

Step 6.

The nice part about the Scotch Dots is you can use them to put up your letter when you’re done. It requires a lot of Scotch Dots to hold it up though, so you might want to use packaging tape or even string to place it on the door/wall. Originally I wanted to hang mine with twine (available at Dollarama as well) but I used a few pieces of packaging tape and Scotch Dots instead.

Step 7

Hang it up! Finally you can see the final product. I placed mine on my bedroom door, however you could also place it just on a wall in your dorm room.

If you tried this DIY I would love to see your letter! Feel free to share in the comments below.
