Monthly Muse: October!

OctoberFinal(All images from We Heart It and retailer websites)

Hey friends!

Yes, I do realize that it’s already nearing the end of October therefore this post is extremely late! What this monthly muse board fails to show is October is also midterm season… Sigh. Luckily I made it through my first week of midterms and big assignments being due and I have a week off before returning to yet another week of midterms. But on my week off I think I owe you a monthly muse for the month of October. Instead of inspiring your month, I hope to share with you a few of my favourite things from this month so far!

Most people get super excited about October because of Halloween. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not crazy about the spooky holiday. First off, I’m not a fan of dressed up people… Secondly I’m not into getting dressed up myself. And when you take away the costumes all that’s left is candy and movies and I don’t need a certain month to grant me permission to buy a box of candy for myself and curl up with a movie ;) But speaking of movies, my favourite Haloween movies are the Disney channel Halloweentown movies! I look forward to October because of them specifically. They may be cheesy but I’m sure you still have a soft spot for them much like I do. You’ll catch me marathoning these movies for the rest of the month!

Another thing I love about October is seeing pumpkin everywhere! Pumpkin pie, pumpkins on doorsteps, pumpkin scented candles, and of course pumpkin spice lattes! Pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks are one of my seasonal favourites. The tasty drink keeps you cozy on the chilly fall days. I mentioned loving pumpkin pie, but of course that takes a lot of work and as busy students during midterm season, we’re unable to whip up a pumpkin pie. So, my yummy suggestion is Pillsburry “ready-to-bake Pumpkin cookies”! They aren’t pumpkin flavoured but they’re still delicious and they are super easy to bake. Just pop them in the oven, wait a few minutes, and tah-dah!

But speaking of keeping warm in the chilly weather… I was creeping the Urban Outfitters website when I came across a red plaid cardigan; I immediately fell in love. I don’t know what it is that I love so much. I think both plaid and oversized cardigans are essentials for this time of year, but this combines both items into one. It’s an online only item, but I recommend getting a closer look here.

Another fashion item I found this month and really like is two tone skinny jeans from Forever 21. At first I was unsure about this look but it’s something different and the colour change on these jeans is subtle. I can see these jeans being worn in a dark, edgy outfit or as a statement piece in a casual outfit. They’re quite affordable too so be sure to check them out!

Little black booties are very popular right now, but this pair from Topshop are much more fun than what you would typically see. The studs catch your eye but also add a little glam and sass to a casual outfit. I’m in love even though they are quite pricey.. Check them out anyway though! Topshop also has a variety of plain black boots that might interest you if these are too much sparkle for you!

The last thing that has been a favourite of mine this month is the song Riptide by Vance Joy. I have been listening to it online for a few days now, but last night I finally bought it off itunes. After an hour of having it downloaded, I had already listened to it 16 times… I just can’t take it off repeat! Listen here, I hope you love it as much as I do.

My plans for the rest of the month include carving pumpkins, baking some pumpkin flavoured treats, and buying lots of Halloween candy to eat while watching the Halloweentown movies! Let me know what you’ve been up to this month in the comments below.

Top Picks Tuesday: Birthday Wishlist

bwltitle

Hey there!

October is one of my favourite months for many, many reasons. One of those reasons is because it’s my birthday month (and also my sister’s, could you tell from the ‘Happy Birthday Alex’ birthday bag in the picture?)! I know birthdays becomes less and less exciting as you grow up, and truthfully I usually have a hard time coming up with a birthday list anymore. However, this year I do have a few items put down on a list, and I’m sharing them with you for this week’s Top Picks Tuesday! (All images taken from Weheartit.com)

Sadie’s Diary: Words From The Wise

Hey friends!

Ever since school started at the beginning of September, my life has been crazy busy! Apart from going to class four days a week, I’m interning at Preloved twice a week and working at Anthropologie two-four days a week too. Most people think I’m crazy when I tell them all of what I’m doing, and maybe I am a little insane. But I read this quote once that really stuck with me: “Be inspired by your own existence.” And honestly, getting all this experience in the fashion industry (regardless of the amount of hours I work for free and the tediousness of finger spacing every hanger in a huge retail store) is inspiring me and making me very, very happy.

However this post is about my Saturday last weekend when I got the chance to have an adventure day and a little “me time” outside of my week schedule. I had moments of feeling inspired by my own existence as well as those surrounding me.

Hey there!

I hope everyone had a lovely Labour Day weekend! The weather was absolutely beautiful here making it a perfect way to end summer break. The sunshine has put me in a really great mood lately, so I’ve been on a hunt for new, upbeat music to add to my playlists. I want feel good songs that I can sing at the top of my lungs while dancing in the sunshine. I’m always looking for good music, but these are my top picks for this Tuesday!

Monthly Muse: September!

September(All images taken from We Heart It and retailer websites)

Happy September!

Autumn is my favourite time of the year! I love the fashion, the colours, and the spicy scents and tastes that come with the cooler weather. As you might already know, I’m a Bath and Body Works-aholic. I could, and frequently do, spend way too much money there on hand soaps, candles, and I recently purchased my first wallflower! But anyway… Bath and Body Works in the fall is the best, the scents are my personal favourite. My most favourite scent of all time is sold during the fall… LEAVES! You must check it out this season. Apart from spicey scents, Starbucks fall drinks reinforce my love for autumn. I love chai lattes all year round, but this time of year they are a million times tastier for some reason. You can get chai lattes iced or hot, so they’re perfect for bi-polar Canadian fall weather. If you’re not up for spending money at Starbucks, I found a recipe on A Beautiful Mess that teaches you how to make your own iced chai latte. I’m definitely going to try it out, here’s the recipe if you want to try it too! For an at home hot chai drink, I suggest Tetley vanilla chai tea with a little vanilla almond milk. So delicious!

The warm-but-chilly weather in September makes for the best fashion of the year. The first outfit I put together for this month is something super easy and basic that everyone can pull off. A plaid shirt is a wardrobe must have this season. What I love about plaid shirts is they can be worn so many different ways.. For example, you could wear a plain or graphic shirt under it and leave it unbuttoned, you could button it up and wear a short necklace with it, or you could simply wrap it around your waist and rock a grunge look. Another thing is there are so many different plaids out there, you’re bound to find something that looks good on you. Keep trying different plaids until you find something that suits you! The downside is these shirts can be quite pricey, like $50 for one shirt (as a broke college student, I don’t approve) so shop around to find one that’s reasonably priced or one that’s worth the money. I love the button down shirts from American Eagle because they’re so soft and fit me really well. The plaid shirt in this month’s inspiration board is from American Eagle ($43.46), you can purchase it in stores or online here. I matched it with basic skinny jeans from Forever 21. These jeans are very comfortable and the price makes them even more attractive… $9.90? Yes please! Purchase them in stores or online here. You can wear whatever shoes with this outfit, I just chose these ones from Forever 21 ($15.80) because they’re affordable and could be worn with multiple different outfits.

The second outfit I put together is one of my favourite fall looks: skirts and sweaters. Wearing a skirt and sweater together is a perfect way to enjoy the last bit of summer weather while the sweater weather moves in. Both pieces are from H&M (sweater- $29.95, skirt- $19.95). This half casual/half dressy combination also allows any sort of shoe to go with it; a heel works but so does a sneaker. However, I love wearing boots during this time of year, so I went with little ankle boots from Forever 21 ($33.80).

I won’t put off saying it any longer… September also means back to school. You’re going to need a backpack this month and it’s going to become part of your outfit everyday, so I suggest buying a Jansport or Herschel backpack. I own a Jansport so I can talk about them way better than a Herschel. Jansports come in so many different colours, patterns, and even sizes (so do Herschels, I know that much). The lifetime warranty is a great bonus, but my backpack has been through a lot and still looks as good as new. You can buy Jansports and Herschels all over the place: Staples, Bentley, Zumiez.. You name it. So keep an eye out and shop around for your favourite colour/pattern!

Even though school is starting up again, you need to find the time between homework and extra-curricular activities to enjoy some downtime. A lot of TV shows return this month with a new season… What I’m most excited for is New Girl! You’ll catch me watching new episodes of this quirky, funny show every week. If you aren’t a TV watcher, maybe you relax by listening to music. I recommend listening to Rescue by Yuna. It’s an upbeat feel good song that might even lead you to a few self epiphanies if you listen to the lyrics! Or, if you’re looking for a mellow song to listen to, check out All Those Nights by Chase Coy. It’s perfect for this time of year when you’re reflecting back on your summer memories and possibly coping with your move to college/university.

Okay, okay! I’ve rambled enough about fall. Sorry, I just love this time of year (as if I haven’t said that a million times already). Let me know in the comments below what you’re looking forward to this month, or share your favourite fall things!

College Diaries: School Supplies

schoolsupplies

Hey there!

I hope you’ve been enjoying your last month of summer. With one week left of summer vacation, it’s time to start thinking about back to school shopping. I’m an organization nerd as it is, but I know tons of people enjoy shopping for new school supplies. This post is about my great finds for back to school shopping.

Monthly Muse: August!

(All images taken from We Heart It and retailer websites)

Hey there!

Again, one more month of summer is gone. It’s hard to believe how fast this summer is going by! Instead of talking about back to school (that topic is impossible to avoid these days) I’m going to talk about how you can enjoy your last month of summer. It’s not school time yet, so lets enjoy what we have left of our summer break. Here is August’s Monthly Muse!

The month of August is usually full of festivals, carnivals, and the hottest summer weather. Some events to look forward to this month in Toronto include the CNE (August 15th-September 1st) and Scotiabank Buskerfest (August 21st-24th). The CNE is a fun time for everyone in the family: there’s shopping, rides, and incredible food. The Scotiabank Buskerfest brings international street performers together into one festival. I’ve never been before but apparently it’s super cool, I definitely hope to check it out this year! There’s also quite a few music festivals going on in the city. I love festivals and highly recommend going somewhere this month. Not only is a fun to go on rides and eat carnival food, there’s usually great music and vendors who are selling unique items. See what’s going on in your town if you can’t make it to Toronto! Make it your goal to explore the town before you’re back to walking the same halls of school everyday.

This dress from Bootlegger ($59.50) is perfect for festivals and day trips. It’s a light weight summer staple that keeps you cool and looking incredibly cute while out and about. Unfortunately you can only buy this dress online, but it can be purchased here. Wear it with this fedora from Forever 21 ($15.80) to protect yourself from the daytime summer sun, and this denim jacket from American Eagle ($54.63) for late summer nights. Denim jackets also get you ready for Fall which is right around the corner.

Maybe you’re like me and also like to spend summer nights in the backyard around a campfire with your family and friends. If you’re looking for something tasty and fruity to drink while socializing, I highly suggest the newest summer edition Palm Bay, the Ocean Peach Pomelo flavour. It’s a fruity vodka spritz that tastes just like juice, it’s my new favourite summer drink. Sip on this while roasting marshmallows and making s’mores and you’ll be in heaven!

I have to admit that even as a country music hater, summertime is all about country music. I know not everyone likes country music, but Drunk On You by Luke Bryan is so great for the summer so I have to suggest it for you to add to your August playlist! Listen to it here. Like I said, country isn’t everyone’s cup of tea so for all of you who refuse to listen to country, I suggest listening to Feels Like Summer by Panama Wedding. This song is a good one for dancing on the lawn with your friends, take a listen here.

It’s sad that summer is coming to an end, but enjoy the last month of it! I’ve been in my hometown for a week now and it’s been nice to do summer things like having campfires and BBQ dinners. When I head back to the city I’m going to be hitting up some of the festivals I mentioned and enjoying life before heading back to school. Let me know in the comments what you’re looking forward to doing through the month of August. Make some memories this month, for summer memories last forever.
